How do you rank sites under your popular sites guide listing?

We have a human team of editors that are constantly reviewing sites in our guide. Below are the primary things that they look at (in no particular order):

  1. Content - quality and quantity of videos. If some sites fulfill a strong niche, the quantity is not as important if it provides users compelling content.
  2. Site is Free - as in no sign-up or registration
  3. Clean user interface - little to no hassle with navigation. Sites with too many ads, pop-ups, spyware, etc will not be included. If they already are on our guide, they will be lowered in ranking or suspended altogether.
  4. Site speed and performance - sites that continually go down or are slow get dropped in ranking and vice versa.
  5. Popularity of site - while we won't strictly put up a site because of stats, the popularity of a site and its quality tends to go hand-in-hand, so user visits is part of the equation. Conversely...stat padding, fake clicks, and spam can also negatively affect a site's ranking
  6. Easy and well-structured site map - while this is not a requirement to be included on the site, it can weigh into how a site is ranked. Usually a site that is well- organized and well-plotted with it's URL structure is indicative of how diligently a site performs and how professional it is. As search is a big part of our site, well-structured sites that help how our search engine performs will generally bubble up higher than those that are poorly structured.
  7. Consistent Updated Videos - this is related to the "Content" criteria but it's highly important that sites update their content and take down poor or broken links. Furthermore...fake landing pages or links to videos that a site doesn't have yet only hurts our search performance and will thus be lowered in ranking.

The video is missing, stops playing, or gets stuck while I'm trying to watch it. What should I do?

In some cases, the video might just be missing. We have no control over the content on a linked site. You might find that hitting the pause button and waiting a few minutes before pressing play lets buffering catch up so you can watch it continuously. Some sites streaming content faster than others. A few sites, like Megavideo, may even charge you a flat monthly fee to watch it past a set number of minutes.

Please see our Tools and Resources and Forum for the latest tips and tricks for getting video to play optimally. Site owners and loyal OVGuide users will give you the best information possible and can be reached in our forum section.

Why is my video not playing? Should I download their video player?

While we have checked (and re-checked) every site listed on OVGuide, we still do not recommend downloading anything for any site that you are not 100% familiar with. If you don't have the necessary player to watch the video on a particular site it won't play, visit our Tools and Resources section to get what you need. We have EVERY major player available to download from a known and trusted source as well as other useful information.

Is it safe to visits the sites you list?

We screen every site we list on our guide and search results using McAffee Site Advisor. In addition, we get constant feedback from e-mails, site comments, and our forum on problem sites. If we verify that a virus/malware threat on one of our sites is valid, we will quickly remove the site from our guide and search results. It is partly a reason many people use us instead of just going to a generic search engine and taking your chances with a new site. If you think you see a malicious site (malware, spyware, virus) on one of our listed sites, please report it to us for review. Details, such as the specific url of where you saw the problem, or the name of an advertisement (pop-up) that came up that you think may have caused a problem, are helpful.

You should always use safe browsing precautions. NEVER DOWNLOAD anything you don't absolutely trust. It is best to only use our list of approved streaming downloads in our Tools and Resources section. In general, we advise having an anti-malware and anti-virus program for safe browsing, such as Malwarebytes and NOD32. If you are using windows, it is important to keep rollback setpoints active so you can easily recover if needed. On Windows, if your computer is acting strangely, you can start things up in Safe Mode with networking (press F8 when rebooting) and try rolling back to a date when things were running smoothly. If this is not possible, try running a full scan with anti-malware and anti-virus programs while you are in Safe Mode. You can most likely recover your system and just restart your computer normally.

Why can't I access one of these video sites?

Since OVGuide only links to external online video sites, we have very little control over the speed or dependability of the videos playing on those other sites. Certain sites will restrict access by Country, so you may just not be allowed if they identify you as being outside of their market. This is common with many of the U.S. based TV Network sites. We highly recommend searching and visiting our Forum where lots of site owners and avid OVGuide users are ready and willing to answer your question or concerns. Our Editorial Team is also available on the Forum to help resolve problems, and also suspend sites that are not working properly – so that the next OVGuide user will not have a similar issue.

How can I clear my history of search terms from showing up on OVGuide?

This is a browser based preference and not specific to visiting OVGuide, so within Tools / Preferences of your browser you can tell it to not store search history on your computer and the browser will stop remembering new search terms that you enter. You may also need to set options that block your browser from remebering filled in form data. In addition, you will need to select "clear search history" so that the browser forgets all past search terms you have entered. These locations differ for each type of browser, but the concept remains the same.

Alternatively, you can simply press delete (use del key) on any terms once they are selected from the search box. Both methods will clear terms from the search history list.

  • "search term" Quotations around a series of words will search for every word in the exact order (this will limit the quantity of search results)

  • (search term) Parenthesis allows you to group search terms and search in a wider variety of permutations
  • AND This is basically like a + sign to search for words in conjunction

Yes, you can accomplish this by putting a capital "OR" between the terms, and a parenthesis "(" and ")" around multiple terms you want to match together.

Example:
http://search.ovguide.com/movies_tv.php?q=(Hercules+and+the+Tyrants+of+Babylon) +OR+(hercules+unchained)

This will match either of the public domain movies

Why do you show me search results that force me to install a video player OR Zango and other surveys

Occasionally a specific video player is required to watch videos on an external site. Please feel free to download the most common players from our Tools & Resources section.

If the player is not available in our Tools & Resources section, we do not recommend you downloading the player from the external site unless you trust the source.

If you stumble across an external online video site that requires you to take a survey before proceeding, please contact us to alert us of the site URL that you encountered the issue on. Our Editorial Team will review and potentially suspend.

When I look for Movies or TV Shows I often add words to my search phrase like "watch", "Full Length", etc will this improve my results in your search engine?

No, terms beyond the title typically just re-order the search results slightly. Instead, it is recommended that you make sure the title is spelled correctly and is the exact title of what you are looking for.

answer(close)
Does adding a year help find the right match?

Yes, it does help especially if you are looking for an older movie or TV Show that has been remade since the original. Relevis tends to match the most recent version when no year is included.
